Copenger is pleased to announce our open call for our upcoming project: Good Deal, a group exhibition at Distillery Gallery and other satilites locations. Hosted at Distillery Gallery, the exhibition space will be transformed into a store-like environment, with artworks displayed on commercial industrial shelves reminiscent of sustenance in groceries stores, rows of books in libraries, or prescriptions at CVS.
The works will be available for visitors to take free of charge. This participatory aspect challenges the prestigious status of art objects, turning art objects into commodities that are similar to nourishments, knowledge, and remedies for everyday life. Good Deal explores trust and generosity between artists, audiences, shelves, and spaces that bring them together. The exhibition treats the act of taking an artwork not as a purchase, but as an exchange between the visitor and the exhibition.
We look towards forms of distribution and exchange found both within and outside the art world, from Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s paper stacks and candy piles, Paul Chan's free whistles, to tourist postcards, department-store samples, flyers. This exhibition not only builds upon Copenger's desire to complicate the boundaries between art and everyday spaces, but explores conditions of trust, accessibility, and labor which make collective reimagination possible.
We invite artists to produce editions of artworks, with a minimum of 15 multiples per edition, to be presented on shelving installed throughout the space. The works may take on a variety of forms, mediums, and processes such as print, photograpy, publications, small sculptures, ceramics, stickers, or other reproducible forms.
Participating artists will receive a modest honorarium to assist with the cost of producing their editions.
